Does acid/lignin only pose a threat to paper/fabric-based products?

I've done a whole lot of research on this topic lately, and it seems people only mention scrapbooks, photos, wedding dresses, and the like when talking about damage done by paper acid.

That has led me to believe that only papers and fabrics are affected by the acid emitted by paper and cardboard and not other materials, such as plastics or metals.

Technically, I've come to understand that what the acid actually does is break apart the fibers, discoloring paper and making it brittle. So this would be consistent with the theory that only paper and fabrics are affected by the acid.

Or is it that people only care about preserving scrapbooks, and not say ... DVDs that are stored in a cardboard box?

From what I have been told and understand Fabric is acid/ ligin free as long as it has been washed completely without fabric softener ( I use dish detergent) and dried with out fabric softener. Steam or dry press.

Plastic can be used as well as long as it PVC free.
